This specialisation course focuses on issues relevant to teachers of foreign languages seeking professional development and certification in the use of new technologies in foreign language teaching in both online and blended settings. The course is offered in English.

The main emphasis of the course is on practice and innovation, providing participants with an opportunity to reflect on different teaching scenarios mediated by technologies. The course adopts a hands-on approach and participants will use a wide range of applications for the course assignments and projects. It also provides an overview of recent trends in computer-assisted language learning (CALL), including the theoretical justification and practical implications for the use of new technologies in teaching and learning foreign languages.

Credits: 15 ECTS

Start: 18 October 2017

Degree: Language Learning and Technology

Language: English

This one-semester specialisation course consists of three subjects (5 ECTS each), which together provide an overview of new trends in computer-assisted language learning (CALL). It focuses on aspects ranging from online collaboration and the affordances of tools used for such collaboration, to computer-mediated communication (CMC), as well as digital literacy and social presence in the teaching and learning of foreign languages online.

The course provides a "sandbox" space for experimenting with new approaches to teaching and learning with technologies, as well as for reviewing online tools and new apps. The proposed technological or methodological solutions discussed in the course will seek to respond to the challenges faced in teaching foreign languages such as low student motivation, poor learning results, accessibility issues and high drop-out rates.

The course incorporates a strong component of reflection and experience-sharing by building on participants' own teaching contexts, making it particularly relevant for teachers' day-to-day practice.
